A journey through time to discover the elegance and tradition of Italian eyewear.
An exhibition that celebrates the charm and refinement of Italian craftsmanship, highlighting the artisanal skill and innovation that have made Italy the beating heart of the global eyewear production industry.
The temporary exhibition project "THE LENS OF TIME - THE HISTORY OF EYEWEAR IN ITALY" is conceived, realized, and promoted by ANFAO, the Italian Optical Manufacturers Association, in collaboration with and curated by Fondazione Museo dell’Occhiale, with the high-value partnership of the Fondazione di Venezia, Fondazione M9, and numerous other partners, including two prominent private collectors (Roberto Vascellari and Lucio Stramare).
The exhibition aims to offer an exploration of the history of eyewear, from its origins as a "reading stone" through the centuries to its evolution into an essential fashion element. The historical journey is intertwined with the history of materials, from glass to celluloid, the evolution of design, and enriched with "virtual doors" and artistic installations.
From its origins in the 13th century to contemporary innovations.
The journey guides visitors through large panels with informative textual elements and visual references such as artwork, historical and costume photography, unique details, and original posters. It also offers the opportunity to engage the public through two "virtual doors," providing an immersive experience through interactive technologies.
Two artistic installations, created specifically for this exhibition, will tell the story in an original way and address the theme of sustainability, through the transformation of raw materials and eyewear no longer in use into elements of a powerful and engaging artistic language.
The exhibition also examines the relationship between science, technology, art, and fashion in the history of eyewear, highlighting Italy's role as a center of excellence in eyewear production.
